A major technical disruption hit Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services across India on Tuesday evening, causing widespread disruption to digital payments. Hundreds of users reported transaction failures, highlighting a significant issue with this popular payment system.
The outage was particularly impactful, with users in major cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Bengaluru reporting heavy disruptions. Data from Downdetector.in shows a surge in complaints, with over 600 users reporting issues. Among these, 82% faced payment failures, 12% encountered problems scanning QR codes, and 6% experienced fund transfer issues.
UPI, an instant digital payment system created by the National Payments Corporation of India and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, allows users to send or receive money directly between bank accounts using mobile apps. It's used for daily shopping payments and high-value bank transfers, offering a convenient and cost-effective solution for users.
Despite its popularity, the recent outage has raised concerns about the reliability of UPI services. Users are now left wondering about the measures in place to prevent such disruptions in the future.
For those who prefer offline transactions, UPI also provides an alternative method. Users can dial *99# from the mobile number linked to their bank account to access a menu with banking options. This allows for sending money, checking balances, viewing transactions, and managing UPI PINs without an internet connection.
