Tinubu’s $801M Military Deal: Nigeria’s Biggest Arms Purchase in Years Explained (2025)

Nigeria's defense strategy is undergoing a significant transformation, with President Bola Tinubu's administration making substantial investments in military assets. The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) reports that the government has acquired a staggering $801 million worth of military equipment from the United States within the past 18 months. This translates to approximately ₦1.15 trillion, a clear indication of the administration's dedication to modernizing the nation's defense capabilities.

Dr. Omoniyi Akinsiju, Chairman of IMPI, highlights this acquisition as a bold move, emphasizing the commitment to bolstering national security.

And this is the part most people miss...

In 2024 alone, Nigeria's arms import expenditure reached its highest point in recent history, exceeding ₦520 billion. This figure represents roughly 67% of the country's total arms imports between 2020 and 2024.

A major component of this investment includes the purchase of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from Bell Textron, an American aerospace giant, costing $455 million. These helicopters are intended to enhance counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Further, in August 2025, Nigeria finalized another deal worth $346 million for over 1,000 MK-82 bombs and 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) rounds. This package also includes essential logistics and training to improve the Nigerian military’s precision-strike capabilities and operational readiness against groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and various bandit groups.

According to Dr. Akinsiju, "This scale of investment reflects Tinubu’s political will to combat terrorism and safeguard Nigerians."

A thought-provoking question: Could recent US policy remarks on Nigeria be influenced more by the desire to expand arms trade opportunities, especially considering competition from China, rather than solely by concerns about religious or human rights? What are your thoughts?
