The Texas Rangers have a solid foundation for their pitching rotation, with the recent trade acquisition of left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Gore, alongside Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, forms a formidable trio that could dominate the league, provided they stay injury-free. However, the real question remains: who will be the fifth starter?
Last season, Texas' starting pitchers led the league with an impressive 3.41 ERA. But with key departures like veteran Patrick Corbin, Tyler Mahle, and Merrill Kelly, the Rangers face the challenge of replacing a significant number of reliable innings.
The Search for the Fifth Starter
Let's take a closer look at the candidates vying to round out the rotation:
Kumar Rocker: Rocker, the third overall pick in the 2022 draft, has the pedigree to be the favorite for the fifth starter role. Despite a rough start to the season, where he was shelled for 18 earned runs in just 20 innings, Rocker showed promise upon his return from the IL in April. He made nine starts in June and July, posting a 4.67 ERA. Advanced metrics suggest he performed better than that, with a 4.14 xFIP and a 4.34 SIERA. Rocker's ability to stick in the rotation this spring will be crucial.
Jacob Latz: Texas utilized Latz as a versatile Swiss Army Knife last season, and he delivered whenever called upon. The 29-year-old lefty made eight starts and 25 relief appearances, showcasing his adaptability. In a week-long span, he delivered a quality start and a three-inning save. Latz compiled a solid 2.84 ERA in 85 2/3 innings, although his xERA and SIERA were above 4.00. With a three-pitch mix of fastball, changeup, and slider, and the occasional curveball to righties, Latz has the potential to be a full-time starter.
Cal Quantrill, Austin Gomber, Nabil Crismatt: This trio of veteran pitchers was brought in on minor league deals to provide depth. If Rocker struggles in the spring and the club prefers Latz in the bullpen, one of these veterans could step into the rotation. Quantrill had a rough 2025, posting an ERA over 6.00 across 26 starts with the Marlins and Braves. Gomber was released by the Rockies in August after a dozen starts, and Crismatt, despite a decent 2.70 ERA in his first six games with the Diamondbacks, struggled in his final outing of the year.
But here's where it gets interesting...
- Bring Back Patrick Corbin: The veteran lefty experienced a career revival during his lone season with the Rangers. After a tough four years in Washington, Corbin emerged as a bright surprise in the first half of 2025, posting an ERA under 4.00 through July. While his performance dipped in the final two months, he still managed a respectable overall line. The Rangers' approach seemed to work wonders for Corbin, and bringing him back on a minimal commitment could be a smart move.
So, who will be the Rangers' fifth starter? Will Rocker rise to the occasion, or will Latz prove his worth as a full-time starter? Could one of the veteran pitchers surprise everyone and secure the spot? And what about bringing back Corbin - a proven commodity?
These questions will be answered as the Rangers prepare for the upcoming season.
