The Patriots' Defense: A Tale of Two Captains
Robert Spillane and Harold Landry III, the captains of the Patriots' defense, are both active for the big game despite carrying questionable injury designations. Spillane, a vital part of the front seven, suffered an ankle injury two weeks ago during the AFC Championship Game. However, with some rest and limited practice, he's ready to take on the Seahawks.
Spillane's presence is crucial, as he leads the Patriots in run stuffs (23) and acts as the primary communicator on defense. With the Seahawks favoring a run-first offense, having Spillane on the field is a massive advantage for New England. Seattle's running game, led by RB Kenneth Walker, has been a force to be reckoned with, but with Spillane in the mix, the Patriots can hope to contain it.
And this is the part most people miss... the Seahawks' offensive strategy includes outside zone runs within their West Coast offense. So, having all defenders active and ready to stop the run game is essential. The Patriots' defense excels at getting off the field on third-and-long situations, ranking top in the league. If they can limit Seattle's run and play-action pass game early on, they might just gain the upper hand.
As for Landry, he's also active after sitting out the AFC Championship Game due to a lingering knee injury. He's been managing this injury since Week 6, but his presence as one of the team's key leaders is invaluable. The question remains, though: how much can he contribute, and will it be enough?
Last week, the Patriots relied on Anfernee Jennings and Elijah Ponder to fill Landry's role, and they delivered, combining for six pressures and three run stuffs against the Broncos. If Landry's role is limited, the Patriots have capable replacements in Jennings and Ponder for Super Bowl LX.
Moving to the offensive side, the Patriots have their full arsenal ready to support MVP runner-up, Drake Maye. With no injury concerns for the offense, the key to success lies in the improved O-Line's ability to hold up against Seattle's formidable front. Finding a balance between run and pass plays, and effectively blocking Seattle's stunts and blitzes, will be crucial.
On special teams, undrafted rookie Efton Chism III is inactive, with practice-squad RB D'Ernest Johnson taking his place. Johnson and rookie WR Kyle Williams are likely to return kickoffs, with rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson also in the mix. Given Henderson's game-breaking speed, putting him back on kickoffs for this final game of the 2025 season could be a strategic move.
After a tense two-week build-up, the Patriots and Seahawks will finally take the field at 6:30 p.m. ET, with the Patriots aiming for their seventh Super Bowl championship, an NFL record.
