Rory McIlroy is shaking things up in a way we've never seen before! After years of dominating the PGA TOUR with traditional blade irons, he's making a surprising equipment switch that could redefine his game. But will it pay off, or is he messing with a winning formula?
For the first time in his career, the 29-time PGA TOUR champion Rory McIlroy is ditching his signature blade irons and opting for a full set of cavity-back irons as he kicks off his season in Dubai. This is a HUGE deal because blade irons are typically considered the gold standard for professional golfers, offering maximum feel and control... but they're also notoriously unforgiving.
Think about it: for nearly two decades, since a fresh-faced McIlroy burst onto the scene at the Betfred British Masters wielding those razor-thin Titleist 660 blades (thinner than your dinner knives!), he's been synonymous with that classic, precise iron design. Whether it was Titleist, Nike, or TaylorMade, blades were always a constant in his bag, maybe with the occasional more forgiving longer iron thrown in for good measure. Now, as he enters his 19th year as a pro, he's making a complete 180.

As he chases his eighth Race to Dubai title on the DP World Tour, McIlroy is now sporting TaylorMade's P7CB irons, from 5-iron through 9-iron, at the Dubai Invitational at Dubai Creek Resort. That means he's leaving behind his custom-made RORS Protos, those beautiful muscle-back irons crafted specifically for a career Grand Slam winner. Why the change?
According to TaylorMade, the driving force behind the switch is forgiveness. "That was the main reason why he even explored CBs," they told PGATOUR.COM. And this is the part most people miss... it's not about a lack of skill, it's about optimizing performance, especially on those less-than-perfect strikes that even the best players experience.

TaylorMade elaborated, "He felt like on mishits, a few were coming up very short and wanted to explore something with a cavity. We made him a set of CBs, and he immediately noticed that forgiveness with improved distance control. [The cavity backs] maintained spin consistency, and they even held the line a little bit better."
The experiment actually began late last year, at the Crown Australian Open. Initially, McIlroy considered using cavity backs only for his 4- through 6-irons, aiming for more help with those longer shots. But he ended up going all-in for the weekend at Royal Melbourne GC and, notably, finished the week gaining +0.59 strokes on approach. He also used them in Boston Common's Season 2 TGL debut, showcasing them to a wider audience even before bringing them back to the real course.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some traditionalists might argue that switching to cavity backs sacrifices feel and workability – qualities that blade irons excel at. Is McIlroy compromising his ability to shape shots and control trajectory in exchange for more forgiveness? Only time will tell.
McIlroy's new P7CBs aren't exactly off-the-rack, though. For the eagle-eyed golf equipment aficionados, there are some unique tweaks tailored specifically for his swing. The P7CBs in McIlroy’s bag this week at the Dubai Invitational feature a custom leading edge, designed to mimic the leading edge of his P760 long irons, which he has been using for a few years. Also, these irons have less offset than a standard set, which is designed to help McIlroy avoid digging the club into the ground at impact and improve turf interaction. This is a subtle but important detail that highlights the level of customization even top pros require.
Interestingly, the iron switch isn't the only equipment change for McIlroy. He also transitioned to TaylorMade’s Qi4D driver, 3-wood, and 5-wood at the end of 2025. That's a bit of a surprise, considering he largely stuck with TaylorMade’s Qi10 line instead of moving to the previous generation Qi35. It seems he's fully embracing the latest technology to gain any possible advantage.
