Diane Warren's journey is a testament to the power of relentless pursuit, even when faced with closed doors and the disapproval of loved ones. This is the core of the documentary Diane Warren: Relentless, which chronicles the life and career of the songwriting icon.
Warren's determination is legendary. She's willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get her songs recorded by the best, even if it means resorting to unconventional methods. A prime example is her encounter with Cher. Warren famously latched onto Cher's leg in the studio, refusing to let go until the singer agreed to try her song, “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
"Literally, in the studio," Warren recalled at the Deadline’s Contenders Documentary event. Cher was initially resistant, but Warren's persistence paid off. "When I said I’d pay for the track, bitch said she’d try it. But it’s all good. It all worked out."
And how well it has worked out! Warren has earned a Grammy, an Emmy, and a staggering 16 Oscar nominations, as well as an honorary Academy Award. Her publishing company is now valued at a staggering half a billion dollars. Her songs have been recorded by some of the biggest names in music, including Aerosmith (“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”), Toni Braxton (“Un-Break My Heart”), Celine Dion (“Because You Loved Me”), and Beyoncé (“I Was Here”).
But here's where it gets controversial... Warren's path to success wasn't paved with privilege. Growing up in Van Nuys, far from the heart of the music industry, she faced significant obstacles. Adding to the challenge was her mother's disapproval of her musical aspirations.
As director Bess Kargman noted, Warren's mother was far from supportive, even going so far as to scream at her father for getting Diane a guitar. Warren herself remembers her mother's concerns: "How are you going to make a living?" Warren says.
Warren's journey wasn't without its challenges. She faced bullying as a child and discouragement from others. As Kargman pointed out, Warren was even kicked out of her first music class.
Despite these hurdles, Warren's resilience shines through. She remains humble, always focused on the next song. As Warren herself says, "If I’m done with the song, even if it’s great, I’m like, ‘OK, what’s next?’ It’s always what’s next.”
Warren's latest song, “Dear Me,” written for the documentary, is being submitted for Oscar consideration. If it earns a nomination, it would be Warren’s ninth consecutive nomination in the category and her 17th Academy Award nomination overall.
And this is the part most people miss... Warren's motivation for writing “Dear Me” was deeply personal. She wanted to write a love song to her younger self, the girl who felt alone and misunderstood.
