Prepare to be amazed—NASA is offering a rare glimpse into the mysteries of our galaxy by unveiling stunning images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured through a variety of spacecraft and telescopes. But here’s where it gets controversial: this event could reshape our understanding of objects originating from beyond our solar system, and not everyone agrees on what these images truly mean.
On Wednesday, November 19, at 3 p.m. EST, NASA will host a live event from the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where they will release compelling imagery of comet 3I/ATLAS, gathered by several of NASA’s missions. This event will be broadcast across multiple platforms including NASA’s own streaming services, the NASA app, their official website, YouTube, and even Amazon Prime Video.
Comet 3I/ATLAS, identified by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) observatory on July 1, is only the third celestial object known to have entered our solar system from interstellar space. Despite its extraordinary origin, the comet currently poses no direct threat to Earth, maintaining a safe distance of at least 170 million miles. Interestingly, in early October, it came within 19 million miles of Mars, offering astronomers another unique observational opportunity.
