The Barbican Renewal Programme aims to breathe new life into the entire complex. The Conservatory, an indoor rainforest with a diverse ecosystem, will get a much-needed facelift, ensuring the climate-controlled environment is maintained. And for those who didn't know, it doubles as a wedding venue on Saturdays, so a dedicated events space is in the works!
The revamp doesn't stop there. Accessibility is a key focus, with new lifts and stairs to improve access to the Concert Hall and Theatre. Visitors will also enjoy enhanced amenities, including additional toilets and a multi-faith room. And let's not forget the Brutalist foyers and lakeside terrace, which will be carefully preserved.
But here's where it gets controversial: the courtyard pond, which has been leaking onto the Metropolitan Line, will be transformed into a new water feature. This decision might spark debates among locals and architecture enthusiasts alike.
The City Corporation is investing £191 million in this ambitious project, which is set to commence next year and span five years. During this time, the Barbican will temporarily pause most of its events, with the Cinemas on Beech Street remaining operational.
Barbican Centre's Chief Operating Officer, Philippa Simpson, expressed her enthusiasm, stating that the project will restore and revitalize the centre, enhancing its world-class arts programme and visitor experience. She emphasized the project's impact on accessibility, public spaces, and artistic endeavors.
Chris Hayward, City of London Corporation Policy Chairman, highlighted the economic benefits, stating that the investment will create jobs and boost the city's economy, solidifying London's status as a global cultural hub.
The Barbican Renewal Programme is just the tip of the iceberg. The City Corporation has several other projects in the pipeline, including the Salisbury Square Development, which will house the new City of London Police headquarters, and a multi-courts complex at Smithfield Market. The highly anticipated London Museum is also set to open its doors at West Smithfield.
