Montreal — In the aftermath of a U.S. strike on Venezuela and the capture of its president just two weeks ago, Canadians are reevaluating their travel plans to certain Caribbean islands. Travel agencies report a noticeable shift in preferences, with some clients actively avoiding Aruba and Curacao, both located off Venezuela’s coast. Instead, destinations like Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic are gaining traction as safer alternatives.
“There’s a palpable sense of unease,” explains Chris Lynes, managing director at Flight Centre Travel Group Canada. “We’re seeing a clear trend of travelers opting for destinations perceived as less volatile.” This sentiment isn’t isolated; Sal Lato, owner of a Marlin Travel franchise, notes that several clients have paused or canceled trips to the region due to growing anxiety.
And this is the part most people miss: the ripple effects are extending beyond Venezuela’s immediate neighbors. Cuba, already grappling with blackouts and shortages of essential supplies, is now under additional scrutiny after threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Social media travel groups are buzzing with concerns about safety and convenience, with many fearing the situation could worsen due to Cuba’s dependence on Venezuelan oil—a supply line severed by Trump just last month.
One traveler’s Facebook post on the Curacao Travel Tips page captures the mood: “I’ve canceled my tickets and am now searching for a safer option. The conflict feels too close for comfort. It’s incredibly disappointing.”
Janet Radley, a travel advisor at Toronto’s St. Clair Travel Agency, is urging caution. She warns clients about the risks of traveling to Cuba and advises against visiting Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire. “During the recent U.S. strike, people on Curacao’s beaches could see helicopters in the distance. That’s unsettling for anyone seeking a relaxing getaway,” she notes.
The January 3rd attack was the climax of months of escalating tensions, including intercepted oil tankers and strikes on suspected drug vessels. Yet, airlines like WestJet, Air Transat, and Porter maintain it’s business as usual. Air Canada, however, has issued a temporary travel advisory for Venezuela and surrounding areas, allowing flight changes to 17 airports.
