Enea Bastianini's MotoGP Qualifying Redemption: Can Portimao Be the Turning Point?
In a sport where every second counts, Enea Bastianini is seeking a much-needed qualifying rebound at Portimao, a circuit that holds special significance for the Italian rider.
Portimao, a challenging yet exhilarating track, witnessed Bastianini's prowess in 2024 when he secured pole position as a factory Ducati rider, ultimately finishing second in the grand prix. Now, as a Tech3 KTM rider, he aims to recapture that qualifying magic after a season marked by struggles, with only three top-ten qualifying positions in 19 events.
Bastianini's average grid position of 16th, coupled with a recent string of five races starting no higher than 17th, underscores the urgency of his mission. However, his race pace remains impressive, as evidenced by his charge from 19th to 7th in Malaysia.
"We're heading to Portimao with the momentum of two solid races in Australia and Malaysia," Bastianini said, reflecting on his recent performances. "Last season, the KTM showed its speed here, which is a positive sign. But we know qualifying has been a challenge. I'm hoping we can find that extra edge to be more competitive over one lap and aim for the second or third row, which would be a huge boost!"
Tech3, Bastianini's team, has a rich history at Portimao. They won the inaugural Portuguese MotoGP with local hero Miguel Oliveira in 2020 and celebrated Pedro Acosta's maiden premier-class podium there last season. Team manager Nicolas Goyon highlighted this success, saying, "Our bike has always performed well here. We had three KTMs in the top five in 2024, so we're confident we can fight at the front this year. Enea arrives in great shape, and we know he's focused on improving his qualifying. Portimao could be the ideal stage for this transformation, given his pole position start here in 2024."
With Maverick Vinales still recovering from shoulder surgery, Pol Espargaro, KTM's test rider, will join Bastianini in the Tech3 lineup this weekend. The team is optimistic about their chances, especially with Bastianini's recent strong showings.
But here's where it gets controversial: Can Bastianini truly turn his qualifying fortunes around at Portimao? And this is the part most people miss: It's not just about the track; it's about the rider's mindset and the team's strategy. Will Bastianini's experience and Tech3's support be enough to challenge the top qualifiers? Only time will tell.
