BYD Denza B5 PHEV SUV Arrives in Australia | Price, Specs & Features Breakdown (2026)

Hold onto your hats, SUV enthusiasts! BYD's luxury sub-brand, Denza, is making waves in Australia with the arrival of the B5 PHEV, a five-seat SUV poised to challenge the established giants like the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest. This isn't just any SUV; it's a bold statement of power and sophistication.

The Denza B5 is built upon a ladder frame, sharing its roots with the BYD Shark 6 pickup platform. However, it distinguishes itself with a more robust plug-in hybrid system and a premium feel.

The B5 range offers two trims to choose from: the standard B5, priced at AUD 74,990, and the more luxurious B5 Leopard, available at AUD 79,990 (both prices exclude on-road costs). In terms of size, the B5 closely mirrors the Prado, measuring 5,049 mm in length, 1,997 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,060 mm. While a four-seat configuration is available, the standard layout provides seating for five.

Under the hood, the PHEV powertrain is a powerhouse. It combines a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine (delivering 135 kW and 260 Nm) with two electric motors: one at the front (generating 200 kW and 360 Nm) and another at the rear (producing 285 kW and 400 Nm). This setup results in a combined system output of a staggering 400 kW and 760 Nm! A 31.8 kWh LFP battery allows for up to 90 km of electric driving range based on the WLTC cycle, with a claimed hybrid range of up to 850 km. And here's a figure that'll get your pulse racing: a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 4.8 seconds. This is a seriously quick SUV.

The B5 is also designed for work, boasting a towing capacity of 3,000 kg and featuring locking differentials at both the front and rear. But here's where it gets controversial... the trade-offs are a substantial curb weight and a somewhat limited payload capacity: 600 kg for the base model and 490 kg for the Leopard. This is a crucial consideration for those planning extensive touring or carrying heavy loads.

The equipment list is undeniably generous. You'll find a 15.6-inch central display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a premium 16-speaker sound system, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and seats equipped with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Driver-assistance features are also plentiful. The Leopard trim elevates the experience further with 20-inch wheels, an adaptive hydraulic suspension offering up to 310 mm of ground clearance, and luxurious Nappa leather trim.

Preorders are now open, with the first deliveries scheduled for late January 2026. The Denza B5's specifications read like a premium vehicle.

What do you think? Will the Denza B5 disrupt the established SUV market, or will it struggle to gain traction against the well-entrenched competition? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
