AEW's Roderick Strong Reflects on His WWE NXT Journey: A Masterclass in Learning and Growth
Roderick Strong, a seasoned veteran in the wrestling ring with over two decades of experience, recently opened up about his time in WWE NXT, offering a rare glimpse into the lessons he learned from working with industry icons Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
In an interview on the podcast 'What Happened When', Strong shared his insights, emphasizing the importance of a mentor's accessibility and the value of an open mind. He highlighted how both Triple H and Michaels were always willing to engage with talent, providing guidance and answering questions.
Strong's perspective on Triple H's mentorship is particularly insightful. He noted that Triple H helped him understand the art of pacing, knowing when to take one's time and when to act swiftly. This lesson, Strong believes, is crucial for character interaction, ensuring that actions align with the narrative arc.
"He really helped me understand how to view things from a character interaction standpoint, and not just 'a thing that I want to do' standpoint," Strong explained. "Those don't always mesh. It's about understanding the character's motivations and the story you're telling."
The AEW star also praised Triple H's hands-on approach, emphasizing his willingness to be available for talent. "If you have questions and stuff, he was always open to answer anything and be available, at least for a little bit, as much as he could," Strong said, highlighting the importance of a mentor's accessibility.
Strong's time in WWE NXT was not just about learning from his mentors but also about embracing an open mind. He recalled Michaels' philosophy, "No idea is a dumb idea. It just sparks other ideas."
This mindset has clearly influenced Strong's approach in AEW. As a former AEW International Champion and a key member of the Conglomeration stable, Strong is now a part of the AEW World Trios Champions alongside Kyle O'Reilly and Orange Cassidy. His success in AEW is a testament to the lessons he learned during his NXT days.
In a sport where learning never stops, Strong's reflection serves as a reminder that the greatest teachers are often those who are willing to share their wisdom. His story is a masterclass in the art of learning and growth, inspiring both fans and fellow wrestlers alike.
